History

Iwanami Station began as the Iwanami Signal Station (岩浪信号所 Iwanami-singosho?) on May 1, 1911. The kanji of its name was changed on July 18, 1912 to Iwanami Signal Station (岩波信号所?), and it was upgraded to the Iwanami Signal Ground (岩波信号場 Iwanami singoba?) on April 1, 1922. It was further raised to station status as Iwanami Station (岩波駅 Iwanami-eki?) on December 8, 1944. Freight services were started on July 31, 1969 and discontinued on November 15, 1982. Along with its division and privatization of JNR on April 1, 1987, the station came under the control and operation of the Central Japan Railway Company. The current station building dates from 1989.

Station layout

Iwanami Station has a single island platform. The station was originally located on a switchback, which was eliminated when the line was electrified in 1968, and the platform realigned; a vestigal remnant of the former switchback is retained as a side track to the north of the station. The station building has automated ticket machines, TOICA automated turnstiles and a "Green Window" service counter, and is manned only during daytime hours. It is connected to the platform with an overpass.
